A brief insight in to how much you are Tracked
I have been like many, “I’m tracked so what, I’ve got nothing to hide”. In my case, I would add that I’m an old bugger and don’t care either
.
However …. and here enters plain bloody mindedness and cantankerous, I don’t see why someone else thinks that they have the right to broadcast to the world that I bought sausages and bacon, thermal underwear, or whatever
at the weekend and in the process, earn money from such global gossip, without my having given specific agreement by opting in. Your data becomes an asset with value, which can be sold. Plus you get naff all payment.
I thought that I’d do a little bit of initial research, before doing more stuff about how to reduce privacy intrusion, just to get a flavour. So here is a brief insight in to how much you may be being Tracked.
I used Brave as a browser, because it is supposed to be one of the most private browsers and shows in the top right, trackers, cookies etc., when you arrive at a site. Brave use the Duck Duck Go search engine for the same privacy reason.
I randomly chose the type of sites that we may visit and those within that category. Data below shows ‘up front’ notifications of such trackers on site arrival. Where this insight falls over is that, on entering sites, you usually have to accept their Terms and Conditions and so trackers may increase. The purpose of this blog was to dip my toe in the water, not to take a deep bathe. For instance, Facebook and Whatsapp both show 1 tracker/cookie and I think that we all have been made aware of the amount of info that Facebook collect. Entering sites changes things and nothing comes free. Why you should dump WhatsApp and use Signal – The Old Fart contains some stats.
This has been a very arbitrary review and I checked just a few sites and their tracker score today and they varied a little from the table below, which was done around the 12th February. I have assumed that Brave’s indicators of trackers/cookies are reasonably accurate.
